 Korcula & Hvar Islands

Croatia

Best Season:

The best time to visit Croatia is the summer, specifically July and August, is the busiest time on Croatia's coast and islands. This is the country's season, a time when the sun is the hottest, the sea the bluest, and traffic endless. The Croatian coast is at its best and worst during midsummer. The crowds can be overwhelming.

Much of the madness is due to traditional European vacation schedules which coincide with the coast's glorious summer weather.

Weather in Croatia generally can be divided into two miniclimates. Northern Croatia has a Continental climate, with average temperatures ranging from near freezing in January to about 77°F (25°C) in August. The coastal areas have a more Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures ranging from the mid-40s in January to 100°F (38°C) or more in August. Spring and autumn are pleasant and mild along the coast, winter inland can be cold and snowy.

A Day Trip from Hvar to Other Islands

Korcula is very small island. I spent a couple of days staying on Korcula island. I discovered pristine ocean with a few great bars and restaurants on the island where I could enjoy Croatian fresh seafood and drinks. I spend most of my days relaxing on the beach, sweming, taking sunbathing, smoking cigars, enjoying juicy delicious oysters and drinking domestic Croatian brandy. I discoverd many great homemade Croatian liqours. I enjoy tasting different flavors and pretty much eat a lot of seafood here. The island is very small as I can spend less than a day walking around the island so it does not have much to do here, After my stay in Korcula I decided to take off and heading to Hvar island by ferry.

Hvar is known across the world for its beautiful lavender fields.  Since I love lavender so much and I have always dream to visit lavender fields, therefore Hvar is one of the place where they growth lavender and a lot of people here are making their living off lavender. I love the aroma of the lavender that put me into relaxation. The transport in Croatia is difficult on a good day especially on an island like this. Most tourists rent scooter but my driver’s license was expired of course and so I was on the lookout for a good cab driver. Finally finding a trustworthy driver in Hvar, I paid him to drive me around the island and he took me to the lavender field. The cab driver took me to the top of the hill where he told me I could get the best pictures of Hvar.  In the end it turned out to be even better than renting a scooter as normally tourists don't know where to drive to in order to get the best views.  The cab driver was a local, born and raised in Hvar so he kept him on as my tour guide for my time in Hvar and he drives me around to the best sightseeing. I fortunate get lucky to see the best view of the island. The best part was that he told me about Hvar’s history.

Sadly the lavender were not in bloom and not purple this time of year but at least I got to see the lavender fields.  The day I saw the lavender fields was a hot day so after a driving tour of the island I came back to the center of old town of Hvar. As usual I ate seafood for lunch and walked around town taking pictures.  What I realized about Hvar given the small size of the town and the limited things to do is if you like to party and drink all night then this is the right place for you. Sadly that is not me.  In addition, even though the hotel I stayed in was a 4 star hotel there was no air conditioning on a hot summer night in Hvar.  It was a tough night for me.

The next day I could not wait to get out of the hotel room an escape the heat.  So, completely out of character I woke up at 6 am and decided to go for a swim in the ocean.  Before getting to the ocean I stopped by a local pastry shop. I bought some traditional Croatian strudel.  After one bite, I decided it was better off for someone, anyone, just not me… it was tough and horrible. I didn't even want to swallow this ‘strudel’ so I decided to put it out of sight in my beach bag.

After the hot night in that 4 star AC-less room I was more than happy to jump into the ocean.  I swam around and then remembered that I had that horrible strudel in my beach bag – perfect fish food!  The next thing I knew I was feeding small fish and photographing the fun.  It was a fun and relaxing way to spend the early morning.  After an hour of feeding fish and playing in the crystal clear gorgeous (and cool) ocean I started my walk back to the hotel.  On the way to the hotel I was stopped by a local trying to sell me a day tour to the Green and Blue Caves and a visit to Fisher man island.

This sounded like the type of spontaneous trip I love so I ran back to the hotel to grab my stuff and raced to get on the boat. The trip was exceptional.
